Streetwise Opera and The Drive Time Choir

10th June 2014

Streetwise Opera and The Drive Time ChoirThis week’s Streetwise Opera workshop presented two new challenges for the group.  First of all, we decided that, with the new influx of participants, the group was ready to go up a level in their acting (we couldn't go up a level in the building as that would put us with the vent ducts, so we decided to go up a level dramatically instead!) Secondly, the group had been invited to take part in the Drive Time Choir, but more of that later.
So to the workshop and we thought we would see what our group were willing to try; time for a few more acting games to stretch them and also help with the Cavalleria Rusticana excerpts we are building and rehearsing together. Some free-ranging improvs produced a range of characters from deep sea divers to Mary Poppins - not many of those in Sicily! We then made the focus a bit narrower and suddenly the group produced some really dramatic improvised mime scenes over the Prelude which were really effective. Everyone gave it 100% and had a fun time showing off their acting skills. When it came to putting the acting and singing together things were a little more tricky but even pros can find it hard to sing and walk at the same time!

Drive Time Choir Concert

Two hours of singing and 'thesp'-ing in the June heat would be challenge enough for most but there was more to come. ?It was time to go into the Royal Concert Hall proper to start the rehearsal for the  Drive Time Choir Concert - taking place with the world-renowned Halle Orchestra on the 19th June  - in which the Nottingham Streetwise group have been invited to take part.
?We have been rehearsing some of the numbers during our afternoon workshops so we were somewhat prepared! The musical director for the evening was Angela Kay. She had a massive task on her hands getting everyone together and I think she achieved her objective of getting us to sing in our relevant parts.?These sessions are informal, fun and free and this was the beginners' session for those who are really new to singing in a choir or who are a bit nervous about taking part.
Streetwise group did us proud and sang con gusto! All said they had had a great time and really enjoyed the two-hour rehearsal. Here's to the next rehearsal!?The Drivetime Concert is on Thursday 19 June and we're going to be singing two famous opera choruses - the Anvil Chorus from Verdi's Il Trovatore and the Easter Hymn from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana.
